+1 for the shoutbox.
I can almost guarantee it will get alot of use. Especially during peak railing hours.
+1 for the domain error. Pain in the ech hmm.
- Ability to post links
- Ability to imbed videos
- Ability to post pictures
Sure lies the possibility that someone will abuse this and post something inappropriate ... but you have to be 18 years old to play poker anyways, it's safe to assume we are all adults here and I think until a member proves otherwise, we should have the same posting freedom.
Obviously if a member abuses a privilage, they lose it. Fairly simple.
- Moderator ability to temp/ban members for inappropriate posts (language, flaming, pictures, links, videos). Problem solved.
Hoopman's point about Mentors being able to fill in for Moderators when it comes to day-to-day forum maintenance, I have already suggested behind the scenes. I can't recall who I talked about it with, whether it was Gil or Idi0 - but this a fairly simple (and obvious) relationship between Moderator - Mentor - Member.
1) It alleviates some of the responsibilities from the Moderator, freeing up their time to focus on more important/larger issues.
2) Gives some responsibility to the Mentors, who let's face it, have had absolutely nothing to do since "Mentors" were implemented.
3) Establishes a relationship between Mentor and member. If mentors are moderating posts, then they will be more likely to become involved more thoroughly.
RE MENTORS:
- Yes, we should re-establish what exactly 888 wants out of their mentors.
- To me a mentor for a lack of a better word, is a teacher. A guide. A person who has some wisdom or knowledge regarding a particular subject and also the ability to share this wisdom/knowledge.
For example. It was my opinion that when Mentors were established, Dub was a relatively new member and I wasn't quite sure of the decision (we also had personal friction early on).
In no time, Dub showed me why Incubus chose him for the role. When it comes to community relationships, Dub was second to none here. He was outgoing with new members, handled himself calmly in all manners and represented 888 well.
Then you have the other kind of person who I think fits the role well such as Cottlad, as the Poker mentor. When it comes to poker, you need a few things to be a mentor I believe.
- Knowledge (obvious)
- Experience (playing for a living is hugely advantageous here)
- Communcation
Unfortunately, when it comes to the actual Poker Players being mentors, 888 mentor program has fallen short. Way short.
If you're asking a poker player to take his time and wisdom and use it to teach members of community, you're not going to get alot of charitable responses. It's simply the nature of the game.
In return for Mentoring people here, the mentors were given entry into monday and thursdays $500 gtd depositors freeroll. This is a game that a player such as Cottlad, probably wouldn't even play if he had deposited anyways.
Perhaps, offering Mentors such as these VIP status, would be an acceptable compensation. These members ARE VIP's. They should be treated as such. This would entice them to actually contribute to the community, to earn their stripes.
As it stands now, there really is no reason for Mentors to do their job except for the pure goodness of their nature.
So basically, all this rambling I've just done is in reply to Hoops mentors comment about re-evaluating who the mentors are. Instead of re-evaluating the Mentors, let's re-evaluate the actual program first.
Let's put a program in that is worth while, make it clear-cut up front. AND ONLY THEN, evaluate who should make the cut.
- Find a Friend function.
If there is a way we could connect this to the poker client somehow, this would be infinitely useful.
In fact, do it for the poker client as well while you're at it.
- Polls
Adding polls can always be entertaining.
Will probably think of some more.
