in a nutshell: know thy enemy

many a time have i seen players fall for the same trick over and over again...to the same player!

however, this is easily avoided. all you have to do is look at your opponents style of play. are they aggressive and will the up the bet? or are they passive and wait for you to make the first move? make a mental note, or make a note on a peice of paper if you have to, and refer to them when you need to

but the infomation you gain on your opponents is useless, unless you have the courage and conviction to act on these. if you have a 2 pair, but know another player has raised you with 3 of a kind, make the desicion based on your experinces and notes. don't wander recklessly into the bets, as you'll find out you'll have the short stack before long.

also, be cautious of people trying to read you. change you're style every dozen or so hands, or just play a hand badly every so often but get caught doing it. you can easily fool your opponent into thinking you have a different style then you really have, which you can use to your advantage

finally, the most important thing when it comes to poker (after winning of course), is to have fun, and show off to your friends by beating them in a game

maybe one day someone will call me sir without adding 'you're making a scene'

all very good points amackin, however like i have stated a few times, it's just as important to keep a vigilant eye on your own game play.

think about it, if you see a pattern in your play others will too, so you need to guard against it. if you spend all of your time watching others you won't have picked up on your own pattern let alone be able to defend yourself.

indeed jedi, and thats most likely my downfall in all the big stt or at the end of mtt, where i'm playing opponents who can and will read my game. however, i've been winning prize money in almost every smaller tournament i enter, but i know if i'm to really win the big bucks, i need to focus on my game moremaybe one day someone will call me sir without adding 'you're making a scene'

it's a good point that you raise about the end of the multi's, i guess it is quite often the same players and in that case it is certainly important to keep a sharp eye on their plays.

unfortunately, i always seem to go out on the bubble in big multi's, occasionally i'll break into the money but rarely come out with more than my buy-in, yet in the short handed tournaments i have a gr8 record!?!

i think that my tip would be to educate yourself, read books(super system, harrington, watch the pros online in high limits or on tv and read as much as you can understand about the maths. this is the key to poker. it duitates every move any1 makes. know the maths know the opponent.

well, in the mtts, you always have a few players who went all in on the first 3 hands and won them all. whilst most people play properly and have about 2.5k-3k, you have the gung-hos on about 12k, meaning they can have quite a significant head start

but seeing as only a few players have this strategy, several players of this group tend to get to the final table

the biggest problem i've seen here is people not being able to get off of hands, you have to realize when your hand isn't good. if you have pocket 4s,they're probably not good after the flop is aqj.

also, ak and aq, be very careful with it, i see the most stupid things with ak and aq here. aq probably isn't good if there's a king on the flop, so be careful. also, going all in with ak or aq after you miss the flop is just silly, because on these tables anyone can be in any flop with anything so just practice getting off big hands.

in freebie,50c-$3 tournies, dont believe for one minute pocket a's, k's or whatever is going to win you the pot with a big raise......it wont.....you'll find you have 2/3 are quite willing to go all-inn with low suiters and do you on the turn.......mind you i do like the ladies...:p

try to get into all-in situations with the worst starting hand you can. it took me a while but i finally figured out what was happening. 44 is a huge favorite over qq for example, calling kqs with j7o is a very high percentage play too. the last dozen or so mtts i played i also noted that the chip leaders at each and every table were playing between 60% and 80% of the flops whereas i was donking along at about 25% so you should definately call most flops.

the only danger is that this style of play might become such a habit that you slip into it at a live game where it does not work, so be careful to do this only on-line.the best player in the world can not beat a stacke

have only been a recent recruit to poker and to online games.I know I have looked at the game seriously and am ready to publish my top tips for learning how to survive; this is aimed at the newcomers/beginners to the game like me but,as WE all now know, unless you get the basics right , you will be goosed out there!!

1) There is a Temple to Apollo at Delphi in olden Greece;they found some ancient (and I mean ancient )Greek grafitti on it -it said simply "Know Thyself" ;this applies so much to poker. If you are aggressive, tone down;if you are passive, get fiery but first get to know yourself, study how YOU play.

2)You don't have to bet EVERY hand.

3) If you see a flush flop and you are unsuited,FOLD.

4) FOLD suited non-connectors; newcomers seem transfixed by the though of making an unconnected flush with 39 or 72 suited,it is rarer than you think.

5) If you make a small pair on the river, bin it!

6)Players who go All-in don't always have a premium hand.Often they sense a weakness and cover it by a show of strength.Don't let them scare you.

If you follow these golden rules, you will live long and prosper....well, you will live long!

PS I claim copyright on the above and will be happy for the movie rights to be included.

cheers

candy is dandy but liquor is quicker
